It’s the middle of a Louisiana summer, the heat index is pushing 105°F, and your AC just won’t turn on. Before you panic — or sweat through an hour on hold — there are a few quick things you can check yourself. Some of the most common reasons an AC won’t start have nothing to do with the equipment itself.
At Tegridy Air, we get calls every day from homeowners who thought they had a major problem, but just needed a quick fix. Here’s what to check first.

1. Check the Thermostat
It sounds obvious, but the thermostat is the first thing to verify. Make sure:
- It’s set to COOL, not HEAT or FAN only
- The temperature is set lower than the current room temperature
- The batteries aren’t dead (if it’s a battery-powered thermostat)
- The display is on and responsive
A blank or unresponsive thermostat screen is usually a dead battery or a tripped breaker — not a failed AC unit.
2. Check the Circuit Breaker
Your AC runs on its own dedicated circuit. If that breaker tripped, the system won’t turn on at all. Go to your electrical panel and look for the breaker labeled AC, HVAC, or Air Handler. If it’s flipped to the middle position, switch it fully off then back on.
Important: If the breaker trips again immediately or repeatedly, don’t keep resetting it. That’s a sign of an electrical issue that needs a technician.
3. Check the Air Filter
A severely clogged air filter can cause the system to shut itself down as a safety measure. Pull out your filter and hold it up to the light — if you can’t see through it, it’s overdue for a change. Replace it with a fresh one and try turning the system on again.
In South Louisiana, filters should be changed every 30–60 days during peak cooling season because of high humidity and dust levels.

4. Check the Drain Line
Modern AC systems have a safety float switch that shuts the unit off if the condensate drain line gets clogged. This prevents water damage but also means your AC stops running without warning. Signs of a clogged drain:
- Water pooling around your indoor air handler
- A musty smell coming from the vents
- The system turns on briefly then shuts off
You can sometimes clear a minor clog yourself by pouring a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access port. But if you’re not sure where that is, call us — a clogged drain is a quick fix for a technician.
5. Check the Outdoor Unit
Go outside and look at the condenser unit. Is the fan spinning? Is it making any unusual noises — clicking, buzzing, or humming without starting? Also check:
- The disconnect box near the outdoor unit — it should be fully closed and switched on
- Whether any debris (leaves, dirt, sticks) is blocking the unit
- Whether the unit is covered in ice — a frozen coil will prevent the system from running
If the outdoor unit is completely silent and the fan isn’t moving at all, that’s usually a sign the system isn’t getting power, or there’s a failed capacitor — which is a common, affordable repair.

6. Give It a Reset
Like any modern appliance, sometimes your AC just needs a reboot. Turn the thermostat off, go to the breaker panel and flip the AC breaker off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Wait a few minutes before turning the thermostat back to cool. This clears fault codes and resets the system.
When to Stop Troubleshooting and Call a Pro
You’ve checked everything above and it still won’t turn on — or something doesn’t look right. Here’s when to put the phone down and call Tegridy Air:
- The breaker keeps tripping
- You smell burning or see scorch marks near the unit
- There’s ice on the refrigerant lines
- The outdoor unit is buzzing but not starting
- It’s been more than 10 years since your last service
Most of these issues are fast, affordable fixes when caught early. The longer you wait in Louisiana heat, the worse it can get — and the more expensive.
💡 Pro tip: If your system is over 10 years old and having repeated issues, it may be more cost-effective to replace it than keep repairing it. Ask us about our free replacement estimates.
