Why Is My AC Not Cooling? 7 Reasons and What To Do About Each One
It’s one of the most frustrating calls we get at Tegridy Air — “My AC is running but my house won’t cool down.” If you’re dealing with this right now in New Orleans, Metairie, or Kenner, you’re not alone. Louisiana summers are brutal, and even a small AC problem can make your home feel like an oven fast.
Here are the 7 most common reasons your AC isn’t cooling — and exactly what we do to fix each one.
1. Low Refrigerant (Freon) Levels
This is the most common culprit. Your AC doesn’t “use up” refrigerant — so if levels are low, that means there’s a leak somewhere in the system. Low refrigerant means your system can’t transfer heat effectively, so it runs and runs without ever really cooling your home. A Tegridy Air tech will check pressures with a manifold gauge set, find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to the correct levels.
2. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
A severely restricted air filter can choke off airflow to the point where your evaporator coil freezes over — and a frozen coil can’t cool anything. Check your filter first. If it’s gray and packed with dust, replace it immediately and give the system a couple hours to thaw before turning it back on.
3. Frozen Evaporator Coil
If your filter is clean but you’re still not getting cool air, check your indoor unit. Ice on the coil is a telltale sign something is wrong — either restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and run just the fan to let it thaw, then call us. Running a frozen system can damage your compressor.
4. Dirty Condenser Coils
Your outdoor unit has to dump heat into the outside air to cool your home. If the condenser coils are caked with dirt, grass clippings, or debris, that heat has nowhere to go — and your system loses efficiency fast. In Louisiana’s humid climate, coils can get dirty surprisingly quickly. We clean them during every tune-up.
5. Failing Capacitor or Contactor
Your condenser unit has two key electrical components: a capacitor (which starts and runs the motors) and a contactor (which switches power to the compressor and fan). When either one fails, the outdoor unit may not run at all — or it may run but not cool. This is one of the most common repairs we make, and it’s a quick fix when caught early.
6. Compressor Issues
The compressor is the heart of your AC system. If it’s failing, your system simply cannot cool your home — no matter how long it runs. Signs of a failing compressor include warm air from the vents, loud banging or clicking from the outdoor unit, and the unit tripping the breaker. This is a more serious repair, and in some cases it makes more financial sense to replace the system.
7. Your System Is Just Too Small for the Heat
This one surprises people. If your AC was undersized for your home to begin with — or if you’ve added square footage, replaced windows, or changed insulation — your system may simply not have enough capacity to keep up on a 95-degree Louisiana day. A properly sized system is the foundation of comfort. We do load calculations to make sure any new system we install is the right size for your home.
